To whom it may concern,
I am writing on behalf of a group recently set up by individuals concerned with the coverage in the mass media regarding eating disorders. We are writing because we feel the need to promote a more accurate representation of the nature of this life-threatening condition. Our goals in writing today are as follows:

* To emphasize the fact that there are severe dangers in reporting misguided information relating to diets, eating disorders and image/appearance/weight. Articles emphasizing the virtue of weight loss often act as a trigger for those with a predisposition to eating distress and perpetuate the distress felt by those already suffering. Reports stating that eating disorders are incurable are especially difficult for those suffering and seeking help.

* Even the term eating disorder is misleading given that this condition encompasses more complex issues than simply food, weight and behaviour. Standard media coverage emphases these symptoms which tends to re-enforce values based on image and appearance. The term eating distress more accurately describes the nature of the condition.

* And, finally, to let you know that we exist and are available for comment. Also, that it is our intention to respond constructively when articles appear on these issues.

Thank you for your attention,
